SCORE Training
Identify sectors or clusters
SCORE Training is best offered in clusters and sectors with growth potential and a sufficient number of potential clients. A rapid sector selection study is usually conducted by a national research organization or consultant. Consultations with social partners, impartiality, expertise and professionalism of the contracted institution are crucial.
Some of the selection criteria to identify suitable clusters include:
- Firms with growth and therefore job creation potential.
- Potential for improved competitiveness through upgrading of factory operations in areas such as
quality, productivity and environmental management.
- Presence of lead buyers with the interest to improve productivity and working conditions in their
supply chains.
- Existence of competent and committed implementation partners such as industry associations and
training providers.
- Alignment with priorities, policies and programmes of government (national/local) and social partners.
Identify and train implementation partners
ILO Technical Experts conduct a mapping of existing business support organizations (BSOs) and analyze the services they provide to SMEs. On this basis, potential SCORE implementation partners are identified. The SCORE programme trains national or local organizations with interest, the capacity and the mandate to offer SCORE Training to SMEs. These are often industry associations, government SME agencies, lead buyer enterprises or public or private training organizations.
The BSO mapping and analysis is the crucial first step to implementation of SCORE Training. The objective is to ensure that SCORE Training is implemented on a needs basis and with implementing partners that can ensure the sustainability of SCORE Training.
Identify training providers and certification of SCORE Trainers
Training providers are usually individual consultants, training organizations or consulting companies with specialized staff with technical skills in the thematic areas covered by the SCORE Training modules and experience in advising enterprises in operational business matters. Training providers receive Training of Trainers (ToT) which prepares them on the technical aspects of providing the training and consulting service to SMEs. SCORE Trainer development comprises participating in a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop, which is followed by implementing a Training of Enterprises (ToE) cycle. Upon successful completion of the ToT and ToE cycle, a Trainer Candidate is recommended for certification by the SCORE Expert Trainer.
SCORE Trainer Certificate is governed by the ILO Trainer Certification for SCORE Training guidelines. This document introduces a quality standard into the programme. The purpose of certifying Trainer Candidates in SCORE Training is to develop a reliable base of trainers who can deliver SCORE Training to enterprises at high-quality.
Marketing, selling and organizing SCORE Training to enterprises
Organizing training of enterprises can be the responsibility of implementation partners or training providers. Certified SCORE Trainers deliver SCORE Trainings to enterprises. Participation in the Workplace Cooperation module or SCORE Basics is mandatory for all enterprises interested in SCORE Training. Subsequently, enterprises can sign up for any of the remaining modules based on their needs, including SCORE4Climate. SCORE Training is designed for both workers and managers. It is strongly recommended that two managers and two workers attend each module.
The SCORE4Climate module supports SMEs in starting their path toward a circular economy through improving resource efficiency, clean production and circularity.
One success story is the implementation of the SCORE4Climate module in an Indian SME, a manufacturer of mechanical seals for agricultural, automotive and domestic pumps. SCORE Training built the capacity of managers and workers to improve workplace cooperation as well as resource efficiency. As a result of the Training, the enterprise reduced its energy consumption, waste and material usage. Before SCORE Training, rubber pellets used in the manufacture of the seals were hand-cut, causing variations in each piece and thus, leading to defect wastage. After SCORE Training, the seals manufacturer was committed to the efficient use of rubber, and the company procured a guillotine machine, which increased the yield from 78% to 88%, and reduced rubber waste from 22% to 12%. In addition, the company invested in a preforming machine, which further improved the yield from 88% to 95%, bringing down rubber waste to 5%. This waste, is now sold to reclaimed rubber manufacturers. Today, no rubber waste from the company ends up in a landfill.
