International Good Practice Principles for Sustainable Infrastructure

  • Published on March 27, 2023

The International Good Practice Principles for Sustainable Infrastructure set out ten guiding principles that policymakers can follow to help integrate sustainability into infrastructure planning and delivery. They are focused on integrated approaches and systems-level interventions that governments can make to create an enabling environment for sustainable infrastructure.

The aim of the International Good Practice Principles is to inform the forthcoming wave of global infrastructure investment. Collectively, they specify and demonstrate how environmental, social and economic sustainability must be integrated right across infrastructure policymaking at the systems-level. The individual principles and case studies were developed via ongoing global consultation and inputs from experts and UN Member States, as part of the implementation of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) Resolution 4/5 on Sustainable Infrastructure.  The principles are now reflected in a subsequent UNEA Resolution 5/9 on Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure.

How does the tool make an impact across SDGs?

The individual principles and case studies were developed via ongoing global consultation and inputs from experts and UN Member States, as part of the implementation of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) Resolution 4/5 on Sustainable Infrastructure.  The principles are now reflected in a subsequent UNEA Resolution 5/9 on Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure. They countribute directly to SDGs 6,7,9, and 11

The second edition of the principles was endorsed as a UN-wide document through a UN Environment Management Group (EMG) Consultative Process on Sustainable Infrastructure.

This Inter-Agency process supports a UN-wide coherent approach for sustainable infrastructure, promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially promoting global goal SDG17
